At the end of last month, Nokia announced that some of its smartphones will now able to download Ovi Maps with free turn-by-turn navigation. In the two weeks since launch, the application has been downloaded 1.4 million times, which isn’t bad considering that it only works on a limited number of devices at present.
This isn’t an entirely altruistic move by Nokia – Google’s inclusion of free turn-by-turn navigation in the Motorola DROID shook the market up, and Nokia is simply responding to Google by leveraging its ownership of mapping firm Navteq. Competitors of Nokia and Google are now presumably weighing their options carefully.
The new version of maps is compatible with most recent popular Symbian smartphones including the 5800, X6, N97 and 5230. More details are available at www.nokia.com/maps.
