Forget 3D, Koreans get to experience James Cameron’s Avatar in four dimensions. An added layer of realism includes special effects such as moving seats and sprinkling water.
According to Variety, a special version of Avatar playing only at the CJ-CGV theater in South Korea is drawing flocks of movie-goers curious to experience a unique screening that keeps all five senses busy. Han Sunhee, the author of the report, wrote that the 4D screening includes over 30 special effects, such as laser lights, fan-powered wind, smells of explosives, sprinkling water, moving seats, etc.
Encouraged by the success of the 4D Avatar, CJ-CGV opened three more “4D plexes.” CJ-CGV’s publicity manager Kim Daehee hailed one-of-a-kind experiences that the theater offered in ten 4D-enhanced movies screened over the last year:
There is no 4D theater like ours around the world. CGV’s 4D plex is the first in the world that fully offers five-sense experiences with a movie title.
Koreans get to watch Avatar in 4D in exchange for $15.80, a pricey experience for folks living in a country where annual household income totalled $42,108 in the first quarter of 2007, according to Korea National Statistical office. Nevertheless, South Koreans are willing to pay more than double the price of a regular $6.90 movie ticket to experience Avatar in four dimensions.
