Bigpoint creating browser-based game

Description:

German video game company Bigpoint has announced that it will create an online game based on the SyFy Channel’s Battlestar Galactica.
Free to play, the online game will use the Unity Technologies browser-based 3-D graphics engine, allowing it to be playable in a web browser.  Although NBC Universal isn’t revealing which Battlestar assets will be used, the game will closely follow the TV series’ storyline.
Bigpoint, a Hamburg-based company with a new office in San Francisco, is known for its free-to-play online games where users opt to purchase in-game goods with real cash.  The company boasts 110 million registered users, 20 million of which are deemed “active,” for its 50 games in 30 languages.
Bigpoint also provides online games for various NBC portals, including the SyFy Channel and USA Network, due to NBC Universal’s share of the company acquired in 2008.  However Battlestar Galactica will be Bigpoint’s first branded effort, a “big step in the market,” Chief Creative Officer Nils-Holger Henning told Venture Beat in an interview.
The game will debut in late summer across a number of unnamed websites.  Bigpoint plans to show early builds of the game on the iPhone and web broswers at the Game Developers Conference this week in San Francisco.
